Mental Health: Adult wards should not house young

Professor Al Aynsley-Green's office has joined with YoungMinds to publish a report, Pushed into the shadows: Young people's experiences of adult mental health facilities. The study looks at the experiences of 16 young people aged 13 to 19 as well as parents and workers.

Young people complained of a lack of information, as well as isolation in adult wards, many of which ban visitors under 18. They also highlighted a lack of security.

Barbara Herts, chief executive of YoungMinds, said: "Despite a change in national policy to end the practice, it is still happening."

Young People Now's adolescent mental health conference takes place on 20 February in Birmingham. www. mentalhealth conference.com.
