Media: Family court cases to remain private

A consultation last year proposed that family court proceedings, which are normally held in private, should be opened up to reporting by the media.

But last week Lord Falconer, the secretary of state for justice, announced that the Government has changed its mind following opposition from children and young people and organisations that speak for them.

He said there would be no automatic right for media to attend, and proposals will now concentrate "on improving the information coming out of family courts, rather than who can go in".
