Letters: Family court transparency

1 min read
Families Need Fathers is disappointed that the much touted "new dawn" of family court transparency has fallen far short of what is needed (CYP Now, 30 April-6 May), with rules that will continue to ban journalists from reporting individual miscarriages of justice.

Although new regulations will allow journalists holding a press card to attend family court proceedings, they will be unable to view any documents or report details of individual cases and judges will retain the discretion to hold proceedings in private.

These regulations are unlikely to increase the public reporting or understanding of family court hearings, despite this being acknowledged as a serious problem by Justice Secretary Jack Straw.

Families Need Fathers calls for a firm commitment in the Queen's Speech to legislate for full transparency in the family courts.
