Children & Young People Now's Manifesto for Young People is a blueprint to improve the life chances of the 4.5 million 13- to 19-year-olds in England.
It builds on the For Youth's Sake campaign launched by the magazine last year. At the time, we called for three things: for the government to set out its vision for young people; that young people have a genuine say at local and national level in shaping services that affect them; and that investment is made to develop the youth sector workforce in all its diversity.
The coalition government has been slow off the mark in attempting to articulate a vision for young people, during a time of disproportionate and unprecedented cuts to youth services. Indeed, in issuing its recommendations to government, the education select committee inquiry into services for young people this summer criticised the lack of urgency on youth issues. The Department for Education's energies have thus far been concentrated very much on reforms to schools and child protection.
