Manchester councils in talks to combine services

Local authorities in Greater Manchester are in discussions to join up aspects of children's services to make savings in the wake of the comprehensive spending review.

Following a series of meetings of the region's 10 local authoritychildren's services departments, moves will be made to collaborate onservices, combine the management of services or merge servicesaltogether.

Andrew Webb, director of children's services at Stockport, told CYP Nowthat there are too many differences across the 10 councils for them tomerge services completely, meaning the focus will be on smallercollaborations, involving up to three or four authorities.

The councils are expected to consider working together thematically, collaborating specifically on issues such as fostering, adoption andschool improvement, or on a geographic basis.

"It is a programme to try and maximise the opportunities for workingtogether, without saying it is going to be a case of one-size-fits-allacross all 10 authorities," Webb said.
