Councils to share services to make savings

The vast majority of children's services decision-makers in local authorities across England are planning to share work with other councils to make financial savings, it has emerged.

A joint survey by the Local Government Information Unit (LGiU) and the Children's Services Development Group (CSDG), which campaigns for a needs-focused and child-centred approach to children’s services, revealed that 82 per cent of councils identify sharing services as a feasible way of cutting their costs.

The survey, seen exclusively by CYP Now, quizzed directors of children's services, lead members and service commissioners. It found that nine out of 10 are planning further "back-office transformation", such as restructuring teams. In total, 120 senior children's services figures took part in the survey – 30 directors of children's services, 30 lead members and 60 service commissioners.
