London 2012: Special report - A wasted legacy?

6 mins read
As preparations for the 2012 Olympics gather pace, experts warn that a unique chance to improve childcare and play in deprived parts of London may be lost. Joe Lepper reports.

Childcare and play are emerging as two of the biggest political battlegrounds surrounding London 2012. The London Development Agency (LDA) is concerned that childcare needs before, during and after the games are not being addressed. It is calling on the five host boroughs - Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham, Waltham Forest and Greenwich - to do more to plan for this.

Meanwhile, play organisations have welcomed proposals to create 120 hectares of parkland around the Olympic site after 2012, but fear that this may come at the cost of improvements to local playparks. Organisations such as the LDA and Play England offer a stark warning. Unless all those involved in London 2012 act soon, this golden opportunity to improve play and childcare in one of the most deprived parts of the capital could be lost.
