Local democracy week: Councillors grilled by future voters

Councillors were given the opportunity to sell their policies to future voters last week at the launch of Local Democracy Week.

Young people from organisations including Scouting UK, St John Ambulance and Children's Express had two minutes for one-to-one interviews with each politician in what was billed as political "speed dating" by the event's organiser, the Local Government Association.

One young person, Sophie from Scouting UK, even had the opportunity to take part in a Blind Date competition with three of the young councillors, who competed for her vote by answering questions such as: "If you were an animal, what would you be and why?".

Political points scoring was widespread. Sam Margrave, from Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council, told children he joined the Labour Party because he grew up in a single-parent family under Thatcher.
