Local authorities: Council budget plan set to benefit youth work

The Government plans to give English councils greater control over budgets in key areas, including services for young people, if trials of its local area agreements are successful.

Under the agreements, central government would set targets for councils, but authorities would be free to work with local agencies to find the best way of meeting these goals. The Government will begin to pilot the agreements in the nine Government Office regions next year. It will set targets in three areas - children and young people, safer and stronger communities, and health and older people - but will give each local authority more power to decide how these targets are met.
