Letters to the Editor: Protect youth work courses

1 min read Letters
I would like to point out something that is being systematically missed from the discussions about the Positive for Youth document.

Since the establishment 40 years ago of a national college to train professionals who work with young people in community settings, youth and community work courses have developed at undergraduate and postgraduate level, educating staff who will be engaged in complex and demanding work. Changes in university funding, combined with austerity measures, means these courses are now under threat. Social workers in training receive funded bursaries, but youth and community workers do not.

Our courses provide a connection with the most impoverished and pressurised neighbourhoods. Youth and community work projects are sustained by people who themselves have benefited from the pathways into higher education that youth and community work has created. It is imperative that action is taken to ensure these pathways are not a road to nowhere.
