Letters to the Editor: International experience

1 min read Letters
I was pleased to see the article about the pilot programme of International Citizen Service (ICS) but feel the need to correct one observation. The article states that "the scheme has been a departure for these organisations, which are better versed in sending older professionals on longer-term placements".

On the contrary, the six ICS pilot agencies bring an incredible wealth of experience in deploying young volunteers in fighting global poverty.

Since 2005, Global Xchange (run by VSO and the British Council) has worked with almost 1,400 18- to 25-year-olds in 27 countries around the world and in 34 communities across the UK. Also, Restless Development is a youth-led development agency and in the past year placed 1,000 young volunteers on projects that reached more than 440,000 people globally.

Young volunteers are at the heart of the ICS pilot and the consortium is committed to providing them with all the training and support they need.
