We have been subsidising the City YMCA by way of a peppercorn rent – with the original intention of letting rooms to students of city organisations and young city workers. But the majority of students now attend colleges outside the city, and only a small proportion are city workers.
The YMCA England has considered its position and, after discussions with the corporation, has decided not to seek a renewal of the lease on commercial terms.
The existing accommodation does not meet our best practice guidelines. There is a significant level of disrepair in this grade II listed site, but the city has indicated it might forgo the cost of the repairs, roughly £1m to £2m.
