The government must follow its warm words on the need to address family failure with urgent action (CYP Now, 23 August-5 September, p10) and put family policy back on the agenda.
But only when there is a clear plan and strong leadership at the heart of government can we begin to make progress towards becoming a more family-friendly country.

EVICTING RIOTERS WILL BACKFIRE
While no one disagrees that rioters should face serious consequences as a result of their actions, evicting looters and their families is likely to backfire (CYP Now, 23 August-5 September, p8).
Government figures show that stable accommodation can make a difference of more than 20 per cent in terms of reduction in reoffending and we know that three-quarters of prisoners with both employment and accommodation problems reoffend during the first year after custody.
