
Residents of the Barbican estate will have to move out by the end of September, after the City of London Corporation and the national body YMCA England agreed that the lease on the building would not be renewed.
The charity has used the estate to provide 16- to 25-year-olds with housing for the past 40 years.
Gillian Bowen, chief executive of City YMCA, said the move could reduce the charity’s reach by 43 per cent.
"We’ve obviously been affected by funding cuts over the past two years but this move, particularly at this time of heightened youth unemployment, tuition fee increases and a lack of social housing provision, is a mammoth blow to our work in the area," she said.
