But for these much-needed reforms to be effective this has to include an urgent review of terms and conditions to ensure that the current anomalies are resolved. A recent advert in CYP Now revealed significant differences in salary levels for a youth worker, a personal adviser and a social worker. This must also be reformed if all members of the youth workforce are to feel part of a united profession committed to delivering better outcomes for young people.

THE SCALED APPROACH
The Scaled Approach (CYP Now, 19 March) is not a system for sentencing but a model to match the intensity of a youth offending team's (YOT's) work to a young person's assessed likelihood of reoffending and risk of serious harm to others. The Asset score will not determine the sentence for young people. That is, and always will be, the court's decision. The Asset score and the subsequent proposal around intervention and support level will, however, inform the YOT's pre-sentence report made to the court.
