Letters: Support for deafblind needed

1 min read Letters
In your guide to deafblindness (CYP Now, 30 July-12 August) you refer to the government reissuing the Deafblind Guidance, which applies to all local authorities in England.

Sense, the national deafblind charity, had been campaigning for its reissue as the guidance could affect an estimated 193,000 deafblind people.

The old figure of 23,000 people, which you used, did not reflect the number of deafblind people aged over 75. The number of deafblind children alone is estimated as 4,000 in the UK. This guidance can change lives but too many people do not receive what they are entitled to.

In a report on children's services, we found only 34 per cent of the estimated number of deafblind children have been identified. Less than a quarter of deafblind children identified were receiving one-to-one support outside school. This stops them taking part in the activities other children take for granted.
