Too often dyslexia is used as an umbrella term to cover a whole range of difficulties. These umbrella diagnoses do not lead to specific targeted teaching methods but they do flag up poor literacy. This leads to support to allow the underachieving student the opportunities that they would have been denied.
MP Graham Stringer's concern about the cost of this support has validity but his idea of making synthetic phonics a one-size-fits-all solution will not work. Many dyslexics have such poor phonic skills that to continue to teach them to read by sounding out words is doomed to failure.
Give teachers the correct tools to deal with the problem and don't restrict them to techniques that don't work for everyone.
