Letters: Aiming higher for childcare

1 min read
The recent Ofsted report, Early Years - Protection through Regulation, has gained a high profile, which focused on a negative interpretation of the statistics outlined in the report. The Pre-school Learning Alliance welcomes the report as a chance to reflect on the overwhelming number of early years settings that do adhere to the national standards and offer high-quality provision to children.

The report stated that 99 per cent of childcare providers meet or exceed the national standards. Parents are also recognised as a vital part of the monitoring and development process and we welcome this acknowledgment.

But can we do more?

Ofsted's remit is to monitor minimum standards. We and other childcare organisations offer quality assurance schemes that support settings to build on the minimum requirements. The Pre-school Learning Alliance offers a National Quality Awards Scheme, Aiming for Quality, which is endorsed by Investors in Children. Through the scheme, early years settings are supported and monitored to meet a wide range of quality criteria.
