Letter: What makes a good childhood

The Children's Society welcomes Chancellor Gordon Brown's recognition of the importance of building stronger families in his speech at the Age Concern Forum last week.

Last year we carried out research with 8,000 young people in which theytold us that family and friends are the most important things in theirlives and that relationships underpin all aspects of childhood.

These findings provide a powerful wake-up call to adults who think thattoday's young people are dazzled by celebrity culture when in fact manyyoung people look no further than home for their role models.

Family is one of the key themes to be considered by The Children'sSociety's Good Childhood Inquiry, the UK's first independent inquiryinto childhood, which will meet throughout 2007. We encourage childrenand young people to have their say on what makes for a good childhood byvisiting www.goodchildhood.org.uk
