Launched on Monday (18 September), the inquiry, which will focus on young people aged up to 18, will find out about people's experiences of childhood.
It will enable the charity to define a "good childhood" based on comments from the public.
A spokeswoman for The Children's Society said: "We are collecting data on childhood via the web site to find out what the conditions are for a good childhood."
