Letter - The right way to campaign

1 min read
It comes as a huge relief that Fathers4Justice have folded (Children Now, 25-31 January). I don't agree that they advanced the campaign for reform of our appalling family justice system. Quite the reverse. Their antics alienated the people whose hearts and minds we needed to win over; their conduct made people say: "No wonder they're not being allowed to see their children."

Mainstream organisations like the Equal Parenting Council, Families NeedFathers, Match and Jump have been lobbying for years and we've madeconsiderable progress. We have, for example, persuaded those at the topof the Conservative Party of the rightness of our grievances and ourreform programme for solving the problem. We have networked with judges, family law practitioners, mediators, mental health professionals, MPsand garnered their support.

It has been a long hard slog and I regret that we've not yet achievedany meaningful change in the law. But neither did Fathers4Justice.

Fathers4Justice hurt our cause. They were successful in grabbing theheadlines, but the publicity had a negative impact. The feedback we'vereceived is that they are perceived as irresponsible, lunatics andwomen-haters.
