There is also evidence that children's health and wellbeing is improved by receiving their care closer to home. However, fragmented and fragile services along with the lack of community children's nurses have been major obstacles in allowing this to happen.
Care must be tailored to each child's individual needs and this can only happen by investing in community children's nurses and transforming how services work together. We now look forward to the publication of the Department of Health's Guidance for Children's Community Nurses and a national framework for children and young people's continuing care.
