Letter: The 200m disappointment

It was disappointing to read about the Government's broken promise to children that the 200m National Lottery funding for play in 2001 is no longer to be ringfenced, and that funding will take longer to be delivered than expected (Children Now, 26 January-1 February).

In December 2004, 400 members of the Free Play Network signed a letter to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Tessa Jowell, highlighting the overwhelming case in favour of establishing a dedicated funding stream for play in order to implement the recommendations of the play review, Getting Serious About Play, led by Frank Dobson MP.

He recommended that lottery funding should "improve and create thousands of spaces where children and young people can play freely and in safety", and that funding should be focused on "areas and groups with the poorest access to good quality play opportunities and with a major emphasis on the inclusion of disabled children and young people".
