Letter: 'Study has skewed viewpoint'

The conclusions of the research on secure children's homes are drawn from one representative from 13 local authorities out of 252 in the UK, so as its title - Qualitative Study: The use by local authorities of secure children's homes - states, it cannot be statistically significant (Children Now, 7-13 June).

In addition, the responses represent only the perceptions and opinionsof the 13 participants and there are no reported quantitative outcomes. No distinction is made between the use of Youth Justice Board beds undercriminal orders and welfare beds under the Children Act 1989, and it isnot clear whether one or both of these are addressed in the study. Thesefactors mean the study has resulted in a skewed viewpoint, and it istherefore most important that the views of the providers are also madepublic at the earliest opportunity, in order to present a balancedpicture to all parties, including policy makers and the generalpublic.
