Legal Update: In a Nutshell - Government policies to face 'family test'

The Prime Minister announces plans to subject all government domestic policies to a "family test" to hold departments to account.

What is the 'family test'?

On 18 August 2014, Prime Minister David Cameron announced that from this autumn, a family test on all government domestic policies will be introduced as part of the government's drive to "put family life at the heart of policy" and hold government departments accountable for the impact of their policies on the family.

"I said previously that I wanted to introduce a family test into government," said Mr Cameron. "Now that test is being formalised as part of the impact assessment for all domestic policies.

"Put simply, that means every single domestic policy that government comes up with will be examined for its impact on the family."
