What are the Children's Rights and Business Principles?
Unicef, the UN Global Compact and Save the Children have developed a set of 10 principles - the Children's Rights and Business Principles - to guide businesses on the actions they can take to respect and support children's rights. The principles also are intended to inform the engagement of other stakeholders, such as governments, with businesses.
Corporate responsibility to protect
The principles are rooted in two core concepts, one of which is the corporate responsibility to protect. This requires businesses to, as a minimum, respect child rights. More specifically, it requires businesses to avoid infringing human rights, including those of children, and to address any adverse human rights impact with which the business is involved. The responsibility applies not only to the business's own activities but also to its business relationships linked to its operations, products or services.
