1) Under a care order, parental responsibility is shared between the local authority and parents, so the parents' wishes can be overridden where necessary. Under a supervision order the local authority does not get parental responsibility.
2) A care order lasts until a child is 18, whereas a supervision order can only last a maximum of three years.
3) Under a care order, an independent reviewing officer must be appointed and the child is considered looked-after and so entitled to regular looked-after child reviews.
