Learning disability: Costs keep children in Antrim hospital

The children's commissioner for Northern Ireland has expressed serious concerns about reports that 17 children with severe learning difficulties are being "inappropriately" kept in a County Antrim hospital.

The children - together with 118 adults - have not been discharged fromMuckamore Abbey Hospital because it is too expensive for them to becared for in the community, according to a BBC investigation.

Commissioner Patricia Lewsley said: "I was shocked to hear that thesevery vulnerable children and young people had been denied the servicesthey need and I have asked the (health) trust to confirm the numbers ofchildren and young people who are involved.

"My office has consistently raised with Government the need for adequateresources for the mental health and learning disability services ashighlighted in the Bamford Review."

She added: "I will now be asking the (Northern Ireland) minister PaulGoggins, why these children and young people have remained in hospitaldespite this being directly contrary to Government policy."
