Children 'kept in hospital' due to community mental health support shortages

2 mins read Health Mental health
Young people with mental health problems are having to stay in hospital longer than necessary due to a lack of support in the community, it has been claimed.

A report published by the Education Policy Institute (EPI) on child and adolescent mental health inpatient services found that nearly 9,000 days were spent unnecessarily between October 2015 and February 2017 by children and young people waiting to leave hospital.

In most cases, young people were unable to be discharged due to insufficient community mental health support or because they could not be transferred to a more appropriate hospital setting because that hospital was full.

The report indicates that the problem is getting worse, with the number of "delayed days" recorded between December 2016 to February 2017 42 per cent higher than in the same period the previous year.
