Learning disabilities: Children miss out on consultation

1 min read
Children and young people with learning disabilities have not yet had the chance to have their say on the youth green paper due to a delay in publishing a questionnaire designed for them.

More than six weeks after the publication of Youth Matters, charitiesare still waiting for the "easy read" questionnaire and say this isholding up the consultation process.

"I find it quite shocking," said Lesley Campbell, Mencap's nationalchildren's officer.

"If the Government is serious about consulting with children and youngpeople they must get their act together. At the moment those youngpeople who have the least access to youth services have least access tothe consultation process."

Alison Giraud-Saunders, co-director of the Foundation for People withLearning Disabilities, said: "It is a good thing government departmentsare beginning to recognise they should produce consultation material inaccessible formats. But it is disappointing there is such a long delayin getting them out because that means people have a shorter time tocomment."
