Leadership: Children's services -- the good, the bad and the future

Do you remember Spangles? Do you listen to music on an iPod? Do you remember having milk in a bottle at playtime in primary school? Do you communicate with your friends via Facebook?

Most of you reading this piece are more likely to answer yes to the first and third question rather than the second and fourth. I often use these as an ice-breaker when I am speaking to audiences as an illustration that most of us leading these services are not necessarily attuned to the lives of the children and young people we serve.

So here, I am going to reflect on six years of leadership in children's services: those areas which I believe have had a positive impact; those with more negative or unintended consequences; and finally, the key principles, behaviours and actions to take forward and protect in a time of significant turbulence and change.
