Lawrence Award winners named

Youth Work
A nightclub designed to steer teenagers away from drugs became one of nine youth projects to win a Philip Lawrence Award yesterday (4 December).

The annual awards, organised by the charity 4Children and of which CYP Now is a partner, recognise young people's efforts to deal with some of society's most intractable issues.

Dorchester Youth Action's Snap nightclub received its award at a ceremony hosted by newsreader Sir Trevor McDonald and attended by Home Secretary Jacqui Smith. "The winners have demonstrated how they are making a positive contribution," said Smith.

The other winners included : Castlederg Youth Forum for improving inter-faith relations; Dundee's Face project for supporting sexually exploited young people; Norfolk's Just Smile and Friendly Faces anti-bullying projects; Shared Vision, which aims to empower young Asian women in Bradford; Sheffield's Community Challenge antisocial behaviour project; and Youth Action's Mutual Respect project that helped ethnic minority teenagers in Blackburn learn about Asian World War 2 veterans.
