Launch of negotiation body for support staff thrown into doubt

1 min read Education
Doubts have been raised about whether a new negotiating body designed to improve pay and conditions of school and support staff will be up and running this month.

Schools minister Jim Knight announced the creation of a dedicated body for support staff last year and promised it would launch in September 2008.

However, CYP Now understands that plans to set up the body are in "disarray". According to a source close to negotiations, the delays are partly the result of ongoing talks between the Department for Children, School and Families (DCSF) and the Treasury about who will fund the body.

The recruitment of a chair for the body has also been problematic and CYP Now understands the DCSF had to re-advertise for the post after they could not find a suitable candidate out of those who applied for the job.
