Scottish public sector staff to strike

Schools, nurseries and after-school clubs across Scotland will close on Wednesday 20 August as up to 100,000 public sector staff go on strike.

Members of the unions Unison, Unite and GMB have voted in favour of a day of industrial action in protest against the pay offer they have been made by councils.

Local authorities have offered a pay rise of 2.5 per cent but unions claim this is below inflation.

Unison lead negotiator for council staff Dougie Black said: "Our members are clear they cannot afford another series of below inflation pay increases."

The 24-hour strike will affect authorities across Scotland, with many nurseries and schools closing, along with disruption to other services including social work.
