Labour Party Conference: Parenting - Parenting strategy first forManchester

Children's minister Beverley Hughes took time out from the Labour Party conference last week to launch Manchester City Council's first-ever parenting strategy.

The strategy includes a pilot version of a parenting course that wasrecently praised by the Government. The council has 272,000 fromthe Department for Education and Skills to test out a programme for themost deprived eight- to 12-years-olds.

The scheme is based on the Incredible Years scheme, developed in the USby a parenting expert. The Manchester programme will begin this month,and the funding covers two years of work. It is aimed at the five percent most at-risk families in one district of the city.
