LABOUR CONFERENCE: Hodge makes a bid to wrestle youth justice from Blunkett

In several meetings at the conference, Hodge criticised Blunkett's unwillingness to give her more influence over youth justice and said she was unsure whether the antisocial behaviour bill would be effective in dealing with young offenders.

At a debate organised by the think-tank the Social Market Foundation, Hodge said she hoped to gain influence in the area via the back door.

"I don't control David Blunkett, but, on the ground, if our children's trusts work we will get a pooling of budgets at local level," she said after being asked about her role in youth justice. "I don't think youth justice can stay outside of that, I think youth justice will come in and pool its resources as well. I think it will just happen."
