Labour Conference 2009 - Labour fringe debates focus on the next generation

Beyond the conference hall in Brighton, campaigners, ministers and delegates took part in a plethora of Question Time-style fringe debates on children and youth issues. CYP Now brings you some of the highlights.

Youth unemployment

Public sector: get your act together. That was the message from Iain Wright, minister for 14 to 19 reform, at a Barnardo's event on youth unemployment. He urged councils and public bodies to bolster efforts to employ young people in the recession, revealing that out of 1.3m NHS employees, just 3,000 are 16 to 18 (0.23 per cent).

Wright also revealed that the government's IAG strategy (information, advice and guidance) will be launched in late October or early November. It will attempt to break down gender stereotypes in careers. "Providing role models across the genders is vital," he said. "IAG should be a process, not something that happens in an afternoon."
