The young people visited Number 10 last week to attend the Prime Minister's summit on youth crime. Lailah Mohammed, Luci Anna Haughton and Saine Badley, all 19, took part in discussions with Brown and other key decision-makers to give their perspective on youth crime. The three, who are all trainee youth workers at Rainer's Lambeth Youth Inclusion Programme, spoke about the need to expand the opportunities available for young people, to broaden their horizons away from crime. They called for more and better employment opportunities for young people.
At the meeting were Home Secretary Jacqui Smith, justice minister David Hanson and the interim chair of the Youth Justice Board, Graham Robb.
Joyce Moseley, Rainer's chief executive, said the young people who attended on the day helped convey the thoughts of their peer group to the decision-makers present. "They have a credibility and an understanding of the problems young people face."
