The statistics were unveiled by youth justice minister David Hanson last week. They reveal that young people in Rochester YOI in Kent spent only 3.6 hours a week on education and training schemes between April 2007 and September 2008. Similarly, teenagers in Reading YOI in Berkshire spent less than five hours a week engaged in structured educational activity during the same period.
In contrast, young offenders at Werrington YOI in Stoke-on-Trent clocked up nearly five times the number of hours on education and training schemes, spending 19.8 hours a week on structured activity. This was closely followed by Warren Hill YOI in Suffolk, where young people spent 17 hours a week on education or training.
