1 min read
Jobcentre Plus is failing to deliver on a crucial part of the government's youth unemployment strategy, Connexions leaders have warned.

In 2007, the government promised to fast-track young people onto theJobcentre Plus New Deal scheme, to reduce the number of young people notin education, employment or training (Neet).

Fast-tracking was supposed to happen on a voluntary basis from April2008. It became mandatory for any young person who has been Neet formore than six months before turning 18 from 1 April this year.

In the past, young people had to be unemployed for six months afterturning 18 before qualifying for the programme, which offers careersadvice and support to find a job.

But Steve Stewart, chief executive of Connexions Coventry andWarwickshire, said the scheme is yet to get off the ground becauseJobcentre Plus fails to engage with other services.
