Jobcentre Plus for schools needs more resources, study finds

A programme bringing Jobcentre Plus advisers into schools is making a positive difference to young people but will need additional funding if it is to meet demand, an evaluation has found.

First announced in 2014, the Support for Schools programme sees Jobcentre Plus advisers provide careers guidance and support to 12- to 18-year-olds in secondary schools across England.

An evaluation commissioned by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) examined the programme's work in nine geographical areas. It found that the programme is popular with schools and works best when targeting young people at risk of ending up not in education, employment or training (Neet).

"The programme was seen to be particularly effective among students with low attainment or from families with a background of joblessness, where it was seen to have worked well to help raise aspirations and present an alternative vision of life after school to that usually presented," reported the evaluation.
