The department was created in January 2005 to improve outcomes for children and young people. It covers schools investment, strategy and commissioning, children's social care and the young people's division. Its partners include the local primary care trust, the voluntary sector and Cambridge Education @ Islington, which runs the London borough's schools.
- What roles are available?
Islington council employs around 3,600 staff. There is a huge range of roles, from childcare workers and child protection co-ordinators to learning mentors and speech and language therapists.
- Is training available?
Islington has achieved the Investors in People standard and employees are entitled to at least five training days a year. Its specialist foster carer programmes have been praised by Ofsted. The council is also supporting a move to more integrated working with a training package developed with Middlesex University.
