Gang prevention programme set to expand across Islington

1 min read Youth Justice
A grassroots project that has successfully turned young people away from gangs is to be rolled out across the London borough of Islington.

The project started six months ago alongside work by the Commission on Young People And Safety in Islington, a group set up to examine youth crime in the borough. Both were created in response to the fatal stabbing of 14-year-old Martin Dinnegan in June last year.

Islington Council and police from the borough subsequently set up a gang prevention strategy to target 60 young people from two wards identified as being at risk of falling into gangs.

It is now being rolled out across the borough with a cash boost of £200,000 from Islington Council to help 400 young people over the next three years.
