Council lands anti-gang grant

A west London council has been awarded a 100,000 grant to fund a pilot project designed to engage young people involved in gangs.

The London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham will use the money to pay for a new youth worker, who will set up the Street Outreach Service (SOS), which will identify gang members and develop effective working relationships with them and their communities.

The John Lyon’s Charity, which aims to improve the life changes of young people through education, provided the grant.

Councillor Antony Lillis, cabinet member for community and children’s services, said: Hammersmith and Fulham is a safe place to live in and visit but, like in other parts of the country, we sometimes encounter problems with gangs.

This money will help us to get to the root of the problem by actually engaging those who cause, or are at danger of causing, these anti-social problems.
