Introduction of Compulsory Registration for Social Care Workers in Northern Ireland

1 min read

Northern Ireland's Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety is seeking views on making it compulsory for social care workers to register with the Northern Ireland Social Care Council (NISCC). It is already compulsory for all social workers to be registered, and this consultation looks at introducing a phased registration approach for social care workers. These are defined as all those working in the social care sector who are not social workers, including people in residential childcare roles, daycare settings and residential family centres.

Social care workers have been registering voluntarily since 2003 and there are currently around 7,000 out of approximately 29,000 listed on the NISCC register. The move is aimed at providing greater protection for users and improving standards within social care services.
