Interview: The hands-on helper - Imran Saithna, project manager, Muslim Youth

2 mins read
Last week's revelation that as many as one in 20 young Muslims run away from home did not come as a surprise to Imran Saithna. As project manager at Muslim Youth he has worked with a lot of young Muslims and many have seen running away as the answer to their problems.

"It's a very high figure but it wasn't necessarily a surprise to me," he says. "Perhaps it would have been a year ago, but not now."

Until last year Saithna was working for the Learning and Skills Council in Leicester, but he decided it was "time to do some more hands-on work rather than theorising and strategising". He moved to London to take up one of only four full-time posts at Muslim Youth.

The organisation was set up in 2001 as a phoneline to support young Muslims.

The line is now open every day until midnight, and in October last year it launched a web site, www.muslimyouth.net.
