Big interview: Support for young Muslims - Shareefa Fulat, director, Muslim Youth Helpline

3 mins read

The Muslim Youth Helpline has been successful in providing support for young Muslims since 2001, while treading a fine line between Islamic custom and Western lifestyles.

The helpline was initially founded by 18-year old Mohammed Mamdani, who left in 2004 to go to university. The organisation now has six full-time staff, 10 part-time helpline supervisors and 100 volunteers. It takes about 5,000 calls a year and also provides counselling via email and the web (0808 808 2008).

Shareefa Fulat, 28, has been steering the growth of the organisation since she became director in 2004. She joined in September 2003 as the first paid member - a helpline development worker.
