Counselling: Muslim helpline to pilot online service

1 min read

The pilot, being run on Sundays during regular helpline hours, offers access to live counsellors via an internet-based instant messaging service, accessed through the Muslim Youth Helpline web site.

The initiative aims to reach out to more young people, said Mohamad Ellis, helpline development worker. "Not many helplines offer this type of service but instant messaging is the preferred method of contact for 16- to 25-year-olds," he said. "It helps them be anonymous; it's fast, and they don't have to worry about being overheard."

The organisation, which is funding the initiative itself, intends to expand the counselling service in March following an evaluation.
