Interview: Liz Railton, programme director, Together for Children -Overcoming the obstacles

Liz Railton laughs at the suggestion that she is a poacher turned gamekeeper. "Certainly you could see it like that," she admits.

In January, she will leave her current post of director of children'sservices at Essex County Council to take up her new role as programmedirector of Together for Children - a coalition of children's servicesorganisations that has been awarded a national contract to support thedevelopment of children's centres across England. In the new job, shewill be overseeing the rollout of the children's centre programme as theGovernment edges towards its target of having a centre in everycommunity in England.

"I've been in Essex as director of children's services for four yearsand it's a fantastic job," she says. "I'll particularly miss the team Ihave created around me. But I felt it was time for a change and to facenew challenges within Every Child Matters."
