Interview: Jane Hutt, Welsh children's minister

3 mins read
To launch an in-depth probe into how your Government is performing takes guts, especially when you don't have to.

But in Wales, ministers put their necks on the line when they ordered areview into how well they were safeguarding vulnerable children. Thatwas in December 2003.

Last week, First Minister Rhodri Morgan and minister for children JaneHutt took a deep breath when findings from the review they ordered weremade public. So far, the political gamble seems to be working.

"The most important thing about this report is that it brings children'sissues and a child-centred focus right to the top of the politicalagenda," Hutt told Children Now.

This is despite the fact that parts of the report do not makecomfortable reading for the Welsh Assembly Government. Although keen tostress that not everything is bad, the review team concluded that muchmore needs to be done to safeguard children in Wales.
